The Big Thompson River, located in Estes Park is a true Colorado treasure. Nestled in the canyon beneath Estes Lake, the Big Thompson flows down through Drake to Loveland. While not a big river, the Big Thompson holds plenty of fish. You will find both browns and rainbows here, ranging from 12" - 14", with the occasional 18 incher. The first quarter mile below the dam is all public and has plenty of good fishing opportunities. In the canyon, the river flows in and out of public and private property, so be aware of where you’re fishing. The beautiful backdrop of the river is Rocky Mountain National Park. Well known for its scenery and high mountain streams and lakes, it also is the home to our native Greenback Cutthroat Trout. If you get a chance, hike the park for an opportunity at a Colorado Grand Slam, which is made up of a rainbow, brown, brooke, and cutthroat all caught in one day.
