Colorado Fish Species

There are many types of fish in the state of Colorado.  Most anglers are after trout, but there are those who find sport in other species.  The fish listed below are most common to flyfisherman.

The Rainbow Trout can be identified by its physical characteristics of dark spots on lighter body, with a reddish strip running from the gills to the tail.  Found in all types of water across Colorado.  Most common type of trout.

The Brown Trout can be identified by its physical characteristics of a dark spotted pattern, with some red spots, on top of a brown to gold body.  Found in all types of water across Colorado.
 
The Cutthroat Trout can be identified by its physical characteristcs of dark spots on darker body with an orange/red colored slash under the lower jaw on their "throat".  Colorado has three native species of Cutthroat which are Greenback, Rio Grande, and Colorado.  Found in mountain lakes and streams.
 
The Brooke Trout can be easily identified by its physical characteristics of white spots on a darker green body, with orange fins outlined in black and white.  Found mostly in higher elevations, in streams, creeks, beaver ponds, and lakes.
 
The Kokanee Salmon can be easily identified by its physical characteristics of silver fish with black spots.  They turn a reddish color and the males develop a hook jaw during spawning season.  Found mostly in large mountain reservoirs.
