The Gunnison River in southern Colorado is one of the states best dry fly fisheries. At the confluence of the Taylor and East Rivers is where the Gunnison starts. As larger river the Gunnison is a popular river to float. While known for the scenic Black Canyon, the Gunnison has an even more impressive trait. The salmon hatch on the Gunnison River is legendary across the country. Every year this epic hatch occurs and monster fish can be caught on huge dry flies. With plenty of shelves, riffles, pocket water, and overhanging brush, the Gunnison River has many holding spots for fish. The thriving bug life allows the mixed population of rainbows, browns, and cutbows, to grow to healthy sizes, with the average fish measuring 14-16". While the Gunnison River exists today, we must protect and preserve this wonderful fishery for generations of the future.
